Safety Supervisor

Position Summary:

TJ Cable & Underground Services is looking for an experienced and driven Safety Director to lead our safety program and help ensure every team member returns home safely at the end of the day. As a leader in utility construction across the Omaha metro and surrounding areas, we work in fast-paced environments that demand a proactive, field-focused approach to safety. The Safety Director will be responsible for developing and managing comprehensive safety policies, conducting on-site inspections, training crews, and ensuring full compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of underground utility work, including trenching, boring, and working near live utilities.

  • Conduct regular jobsite audits and inspections to identify hazards, ensure regulatory compliance, and reinforce safe work habits.

  • Lead company-wide safety training initiatives, including onboarding new hires, providing ongoing instruction, and offering specialized training for high-risk tasks such as confined space entry and utility locates.

  • Investigate all incidents, including near-misses and accidents, document findings, and implement corrective actions to reduce future risk.

  • Work directly with foremen, project managers, and crew leaders to plan safe job execution and integrate safety measures into daily operations.

  • Maintain detailed safety documentation and reporting in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company requirements.

  • Serve as the main point of contact for regulatory inspections and audits, ensuring timely communication and accurate reporting.

  • Stay up to date with industry best practices, emerging regulations, and safety technologies relevant to underground utility construction.

  • Promote a company-wide culture of safety by encouraging open dialogue, offering support in the field, and recognizing safe performance.

  • Manage the safety budget, including investments in PPE, safety equipment, and training resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred; relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years of safety management experience, with strong preference given to candidates with utility or underground construction backgrounds.

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards, DOT regulations, and other relevant industry safety requirements.

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or equivalent certification is highly desirable.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and training skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with field crews.

  • Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities, with an eye for detail.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, field-based environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software platforms.
